First Responders

One of my personal favorite hero topics: First Responders! Medics, Fireman, Police, without these people, things would be very, very bad. There are others, too, but today, I’d like to talk about what these people do and why, to me, they are heroic.

Several years ago, I was in the Moore Oklahoma tornado. My house fell on my tornado safe. I won it in a Storm Shelter Contest (which makes the supplier a hero to me!) We had an underground shelter built into our garage, which was great during the storm! However, after the storm, we stuck in the shelter for 14 hours.

My mother, who is 72, started to have some serious issues with her heart during that time. She was diagnosed with congestive heart failure the year before and we’ve had moments where it was touch and go. Of course, being down in the dark, with her having problems, was so terrifying!

Eventually, the fire department was able to remove enough debris from the site for us to be able to open the door. My mother had passed out from pain. Two EMT’s came and immediately took charge of my mother. If they had not come along, when they did, we would have lost her that day.

I am not the only one who had issues that day. Nor or we the only ones who were trapped in the wreckage. Those fireman, police and EMT teams worked around the clock with volunteers for over a week, helping anyone and everyone who needed it. They sacrificed. A LOT. To me, what they did was heroic and life changing, for me, my mother and my family.
